Criminal Intelligence Analysis Essentials

July 21-23, 2015 

This awareness-level course, Criminal Intelligence Analysis Essentials, presents participants with the fundamental core capabilities required for intelligence analysis from an all-crimes, all-hazards perspective, encompassing traditional crimes, domestic and international acts of terrorism, and other potential crises. It introduces entry-level intelligence personnel to intelligence and the difference between information and intelligence, the Intelligence Community, and the responsibilities ofan intelligence analyst. The course teaches participants the goals of and uses of intelligence analysis, the range of intelligence customers, and the importance of having a thorough understanding of the customer’s intelligence need. It reviews and examines each of the six steps in the intelligence process and the importance of critical and creative thinking to each step. Intelligence-led policing, the information sharing environment, and suspicious activity reporting are reviewed, as well as legal authorities and guidance including privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties legislation. The course also reviews the benefits of forming strategic partnerships and collaborative networks.

Crime Analyst Level 1 Certification Exam 2015

 

The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety is pleased to announce the Municipal Police Training Council approved Crime Analyst Level 1 Certification Examination.  The free exam will be held on May 2, 2015 in Albany, Erie, Monroe, Nassau, and Onondaga Counties. This Crime Analysis Certification will support your professional development.  Being certified by New York State illustrates that you have a comprehension of basic crime analysis skills.  This exam is not utilized as an application to a specific job.

Admission to the exam will be determined on a first come first serve basis, with priority seating given in the following order:

  1. Analysts employed by New York State Criminal Justice agencies*
  1. Students and alums of New York State based colleges and universities*
  1. Analysts from other states*

* Documentation of eligibility will be requested

Examination questions are drawn from resources found in “Appendix A.”  Also found in “Appendix A” is a listing of the topical areas that those questions will be based upon.

The registration deadline is April 3, 2015.  You must complete the exam application and have it sent no later than the registration deadline to request admission.  Absolutely no “walk-ins” will be accepted to sit for the exam.  For your convenience it may be submitted via email by utilizing the “Submit by Email” radio button on the exam application form. The application link is at the bottom of this email. You may also download the application by connecting to the DCJS training calendar http://calendar.dcjs.state.ny.us/ and navigating to the exam date. Candidates can expect they will receive a “notice to appear confirmation” no later than April 10, 2015. Those arriving late may be denied admission.  Candidates who do not receive a notice to appear or notification that the exam has reached capacity may call (518) 457-2666 after April 17, 2015.

Candidates will have three (3) hours to complete the exam.  The exam is comprised of multiple choice questions. Cell phones or electronic/communication devices of any kind are NOT ALLOWED at the test site.  The use of such devices in the exam room, hallways, restrooms, building, grounds or other areas will result in your disqualification.  Those arriving late may be denied admission. BJA NTTAC Offers Crime Analysis TTA Resources

We are pleased to announce that BJA’s National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC) is providing new training and technical assistance (TTA) resources that can be tailored to address the most critical needs of state, local, and tribal criminal justice agencies. One of these new TTA resources is the Crime Analysis on Demand TTA program.

Through NTTAC, BJA will offer Crime Analysis on Demand TTA services to address analytical gaps and needs for crime analysts and law enforcement personnel. Through this program, BJA NTTAC will help law enforcement agencies enhance their capabilities to analyze and use data to make informed decisions, respond effectively, and prevent crime.
