
Jorge Espejel-Contreras was IALEIA’s Mexican Chapter President when he passed away unexpectedly in January 2007. Jorge was known as a reserved man, but was passionate about the role of the honest and ethical use of intelligence in law enforcement. He showed great dedication to his community, and to his country, and will be missed by his many friends in IALEIA.
IALEIA continues to strive for professionalism in the intelligence analysis career field through promoting and supporting career development and continuing education.
Award Background
In 2005, IALEIA introduced a new membership category serving academic institutions. The dues generated from this membership category were designated to fund an IALEIA scholarship.
The IALEIA-funded scholarship was renamed the Jorge Espejel-Contreras IALEIA Scholarship Award following the untimely death of the IALEIA Mexico Chapter President in 2007.
In 2014, one $1,500 (USD) scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student. The application process takes place in the spring of 2014. The scholarship will be awarded at the 2014 IALEIA annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The successful candidate will be invited to attend the 2014 conference banquet to receive the award.
Eligibility Criteria
Any active IALEIA member, or immediate family member of an active IALEIA member, who is enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution in the fall of 2014, is eligible to apply for the scholarship. Eligibility is based on full-time or part-time enrollment in an accredited college/university, and can be on campus or via distance-learning. The applicant must be a student in the disciplines of intelligence, analysis, statistics, criminal justice or other related undergraduate or graduate program. Other areas of study may be considered in the event that no viable applications are received from the specified disciplines.
Restrictions
- IALEIA board members and their immediate family members are not eligible for the scholarship.
- Members of the Scholarship Committee and/or reviewers of essays may not be related in any way to any applicant under consideration for the scholarship award.
Eligible academic institutions

- Accredited by an official accreditation body for the applicable location/country
- Accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), if the academic institution and/or degree program is online
- A combination of the above.
Requirements
- Essay has a 1500 word minimum and 2000 word maximum
- Essays must be submitted in WORD PERFECT, MS WORD, TXT or PDF format to Scholarships@ialeia.org no later than March 14th, 2014
- No special characters or symbols may be used in essays
- No graphics, tables, charts, or other filler material allowed
- Essays must be submitted in English
- A letter of acceptance for the current 2014 fall semester at an accredited post-secondary institution and/or a letter from a facility advisor on institution letterhead indicating the applicant is enrolled as a student in the fall semester must accompany the essay as a separate attachment.
- Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

The application package must contain a minimum 1,500-word, maximum 2,000-word essay on the following topic.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Scholarships
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is making three (3) scholarships available for the following event:
· IALEIA/LEIU Annual Training Event in Phoenix, AZ from May 4-8, 2015. (info at http://www.ialeia.org/128-2015-ialeia-leiu-annual-training-event.html)
These scholarships will cover travel expenses to attend the event, as well as registration fees.
Interested analysts should submit a request to FusionCenterSupport@HQ.DHS.GOV. Please include a description of your current position and how you and your center will benefit from attending the event. Requests should be submitted via e-mail by COB February 27, 2015.

The AFIO Scholarship
The Association of Former Intelligence Officer sponsors 19 scholarships (most at $4,000 or $2,000) for students studying or desiring careers in intelligence.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: JULY 1
Applications can be sent to AFIO starting in March. Do you qualify for several of these scholarships? If so, you need send in only one master application and supporting materials. Indicate in your cover letter which AFIO scholarships you think you might qualify for; you will be considered for each one. If you are granted one, you will not be considered for others. AFIO occasionally grants scholarships to individuals who received an AFIO grant in prior years. Feel free to apply again.

Guidelines
For Undergraduates scholarships, applicants must be entering their sophomore or junior year. · For Graduate scholarships, applications must be submitted no earlier than your senior undergraduate year and no later than your second year of graduate studies. · Evaluation criteria may include merit, character, estimated future potential, background (for example, parent’s AFIO membership or careers, etc.), and relevance of their studies to the full spectrum of national security interests and career ambitions. · Applications are evaluated by a special AFIO committee. Evaluations will be impressionistic and personal, by committee consensus, and with decisions final. · Tuition grants will be paid directly to the Bursar/Registrar of the University concerned – under NO circumstances will payments be made directly to awardees. · All applicants must be U.S. citizens. No Scholarship will be awarded to students attending foreign universities or schools not US-accredited, nor to law schools [foreign or domestic].
Applicants must provide:
- Cover Letter (i.e. explaining your need for scholarship, your career goals and dreams, your views of U.S. world standing and intelligence community)
- Resume (i.e. address, age, college, experience, extra-curricular activities)
- A copy of your academic transcript – need not be original or “official”
- One recommendation
- Recent photograph – can be sent as a high resolution digital image file via email attachment, or printed and mailed. Image should show full face…sitting, standing, or portrait only.
- Indicate WHICH scholarships you wish to be considered for. No need to send multiple copies of your materials.
